Non-pensionable pay

A message from Brian Thubron quotes Jim Lamb:

"You will appreciate that pensions are just one element of the
compensation package and IBM found that prospective and current
employees were putting a greater value on current salary and
benefit levels than they were on future pensions."

How did Jim Lamb form these views about current employees?
Was there a question on the opinion survey? Have there been
lots of SpeakUps from people asking to have more of their
renumeration as non-pensionable pay?

It was quite the opposite in my day. Most employees had a high
opinion of pension funds as a way to save, and AVCs were popular.
