GG - thanks...

At the end of the day, all things considered, as it were, in a manner of speaking... as you saud, it all came down to a coin-flip.
Other factors... MS Money and other "planning" tools indicated take now rather than later... (given moderate investment return/inflation estimates). UK weren't going to tax it... and the double (well, reduced) taxation in US wasn't therefore going to hit the total too much. Cash now gives me added flexibility what to do with / when to start drawing on the rest of my retirement "pot".
And of course.... (probably) less prone to any future policy changes arouind the defined benefits.

I'll be back to post at age 85 or so with a more reasoned/seasoned pros/cons.

Meanwhile....(shameless pumping!): > GO AKAM ! (that's my *real* pension!)

: Richard,

: Good to see you arrived at a conclusion following your earlier agonising. It is always going to be a closely run decision but on balance I'm sure you've done the right thing.

: Out of interest, and perhaps to help others in the same boat, having asked for opinions and input in February, what then were the factors and arguments that made you decide to take it now rather than wait. NOT intending to start a debate about it - just interested to hear the rationale.
