Bill Gates as IBM chairman?

The November issue of "Wired" has an apparently knowledgeable
article that says "IBM's board tried in vain to recruit Gates
to become the company's chair". Had the board succeeded, would
that have been better for us than Mr Gerstner? It also has a
quote from Emerson for those who wonder what Mr Gerstner has to
do with our problems: "An institution is the lengthened shadow
of one man".

Changing topic, do you have any documents in which IBM told you
about Retail Price Index changes? The pension-changes-v-RPI
table on this site was done from teletext data about the RPI.
It does not match some figures put out by IBM, in letters to MPs
etc. I would particularly like to hear about documentation
from the time before Havant closed, since many people will have
based their retirement decisions on that.
