Cable & Wireless: C&W denies staff effective consultation says CWU
Following unprecedented staff anger about proposed changes to their redundancy procedures, staff at Cable & Wireless UK were astonished when their elected representatives on the Employee Consultation Forum (ECF) were refused a request to seek independent legal advice.
The ECF representatives had been assured by the company that the changes were discretionary and not contractual. However, the ECF asked C&W for the right to have this independently assessed and verified.
The CWU had previously welcomed HR Director Paul Rodgers' earlier statement to staff that the company now wishes to focus on growth. However, Donald MacDonald added that "Mr Rodgers said that they are going to expand job opportunities in the future, rather than exiting people. So why propose removing the scheme? If their optimism is justified, retention of the 12-week period would not cost them anything.
