That is also true. Prior to moving to IBM I was Systems and Programming Manager at a largish IBM customer, and looked at the world in application terms.
There were only a tiny percentage of SEs who had the aptitude or attitude to get deeply involved in customer applications - I can think of 3 SEs only, and perhaps 3 "others" (who lived in the project management world). Perhaps 2% of the people I worked with?
So when the game changed IBM was singularly ill-equipped.
