It came to be that they were positively encouraged to stay away from it. No one wanted risk particularly when one could make a fortune without it. Then they had to take risk but in the main didn't know how to do so. So there were disasters. Lots of them. Most often the disasters centred around a single individual with bags of personal confidence and a desire to win, but actually with few if any skills if viewed objectively. It was the blind leading the blind. The worst cases involved otherwise very credible salesmen. They only did it once though.
