Thanks for your very useful information.
I have received a communication from the Pensions Directorate which describes the process in detail.
As they readily admit, it is not easy to correlate the info on their form BR2199 back to the IBM payslip, but it is possible providing you use their formula. It involves notional Additional pension payments and COD deductions (for COD read GMP).
Complicated, convoluted but it does seem to work out.
